Hey all! I hope you are all are doing well finishing up school or whatever business you have to attend to before we leave.  I have a few tips and a challenge ahead.

So, two years ago I sat in my room and thought "hmm... how do I fit all my life in a backpack?"  Here's what I concluded.  First, my life has nothing to do with what's in the backpack.  After all Jesus instructed his disciples to take nothing (material) for their journey, not even an extra raincoat.  And two, without going to that extreme, I could do it quite easily.

1.        I discovered Pack-Mates which are the nifty bags you see on late night commercials.  Just put your clothes in, roll out the air, and presto! more space (though not less weight, beware of that).

2.       When preaching in an African church my friend talked about abandonment and traveling the world with just five shirts, etc, for year.  At this point he got caught up when he realized the men in the congregation probably only owned about two shirts a piece and that his life was rather extravagant by their standards.  You can wash your clothes (probably by hand), and I don't mind if you stink a little bit.  What do you really need?

3.       Same with books and gadgets.  I left with four books and my Bible.  I came home with my Bible.  I love to read, but there are so many other pursuits (one of them being the Word of God).  At most bring one paperback and plan on swapping around when you get finished.  Gadget wise, I've never been to Peru and am unsure about our electricity availability but don't count on it.

4.       Note: you can buy mosquito nets and hammocks in country.  They are probably cheaper there and you don't have to haul them to and from (you could donate yours upon leaving).

Okay, so only a few tips.  The main point being:  you now have some EXTRA space.  What to do with it?  We've been asked by our contact to bring some crafts, specifically for children's ministry, but also some for women's Bible studies (and maybe men too?).  I challenge each of you to think up one craft we could do.  Be creative!

So, here's what we need:

1.        Ideas.  Let's take the next week and just post comments of any craft ideas, things you have done, things you just thought up, or maybe an idea you found searching online.  Feel free to post more than one.

2.       Supplies.  Starting Monday the 17th we will compile of a list of supplies needed in order to do several of the projects (as we will be traveling to several villages we can do the same craft more than once), and at that point people can sign up for whatever they can fit in (and afford)

3.       Ownership.  I'm pretty big on taking responsibility for something that captures your heart.  It's okay if you're not perfect at it, or if you need guidance and help at times, that's what we're here for.  That said, if anyone (or two people) would like to spearhead this project (picking which crafts to do, compiling a list of what's needed, making sure supplies are covered and letting us know what options we have once in Peru), that would be fantastic.  Just let me know.

Alright, start brainstorming!
